What we laugh at, we tend to accept. And what we accept, we eventually believe and practice. Dave and Bethlie launch a new part of the Overcoming series: Overcoming the Lies We Believe.

This introductory episode looks at three sources of deception: the enemy, who has lied since the Garden; a cultureamplified by social media, AI, and viral humor; and, most surprisingly, ourselves. The Youngs explain why lies don’t only affect “the culture out there.” They quietly shape good Christian homes, marriages, and how we go about raising children.

The only way to overcome them is the Word of truth, read personally, taught at home, and given priority over every other activity.

Overcoming the Lies We Believe: Series Introduction

Dave and Bethlie begin the final stretch of their year-long Overcoming series with one of their most important topics yet: the lies we believe, and the lies we practice. When our beliefs are wrong, they shape our habits and behavior. That affects our personal lives, our marriages, our churches, and how we raise our children.

Source 1: The Enemy Is a Liar

The Father of Lies

Dave points to John 8:44, where Jesus calls the devil a liar and the father of lies, and to John 10:10, where the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy. Often the enemy does that destroying through the lies we believe, from political lies that have cost lives to personal lies that damage marriages, children, and grandchildren.

“Yea, Hath God Said?”

Bethlie notes that Satan’s very first lie in the Garden questioned God’s word. She shares how the enemy lies on both sides of sin, using abortion as an example. First he says, “It’s your body, it’s not really a baby.” Afterward he says, “No one will ever forgive you, and God can’t love you now.” He tempts us into sin, then piles on shame to keep us in bondage.

Source 2: The Culture Is Deceiving Us

Some cultural lies are simply accepted norms. Others are deliberate, patient, and designed. Dave explains how harmful systems advance step by step, with each step made to look desirable so we ignore where the path leads.

Scripture’s Warnings About Deception

Source 3: We Can Deceive Ourselves

One of the strangest truths in Scripture is that we can convince ourselves something is true when it isn’t, and then defend it and live it.

The Only Way to Overcome: The Word of Truth

Follow the Word, Not the Influencer

Bethlie cautions against trusting an Instagram influencer, a favorite author, or a conference speaker more than Scripture. Come to the Bible with an open heart and a mind ready to reason, not with the attitude that it’s too archaic to apply.

Devotionals Can’t Replace the Bible

Good devotional books and commentaries have value, but they can’t replace reading line upon line and precept upon precept: whole chapters, whole books, and the whole counsel of God. Listening while exercising or driving is fine, but life change requires sitting down to focus, learn, and apply.

Church and Family Devotions Are Under Attack

Many families let sports, events, and activities take priority over church. Our forefathers made church the foundation of life, not an add-on. Dave points to Deuteronomy’s pattern of teaching children God’s Word when sitting at home, walking along the way, lying down, and rising up. Without personal Bible reading, family devotions, and faithful church attendance, we can’t overcome the lies.

4. Key Takeaways

Raising children in the truth requires family devotions and making church a priority, not an add-on to a busy schedule

Who we are

Lighthouse Christian Radio is a radio station in Milwaukee, WI. Our website address is: https://www.lighthouse.radio

Personal data we collect and why we collect it:

Song votes and listener feedback

When you submit a thumbs-up or thumbs-down vote, we store your choice, the song or broadcast title, artist, album, channel, broadcast time, and the time your vote was created or changed. A randomly generated browser identifier connects your votes without requiring your name or email address. We use this feedback to understand listener preferences and improve programming. Authorized website administrators can view and export these records. You may change your vote for the same airing.

To estimate your city and state, our server sends your IP address over an encrypted connection to ipapi.is. The voting system saves only the resulting city and state and the lookup provider name; it does not save your IP address, an IP-address hash, precise coordinates, or postal code with your vote. These estimates may be inaccurate, particularly when using a VPN or mobile network. Votes can still be saved when location is unavailable. See the ipapi.is privacy policy for the provider’s practices. Hosting and security systems may process IP addresses separately from the voting feature.

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact Forms

We collect only the information listed on any and all contact forms on our website. Your information may be used to contact you, but we never share, distribute, sell, or provide your form data to any external party. If you request, we will delete your form data from all of our records.

Cookies

When you use the voting controls, we set a secure browser cookie that lasts up to 90 days to recognize your guest voting session and associate your votes with that browser. Clearing or blocking this cookie may prevent voting or access to your previous guest votes; clearing it does not delete votes already stored on our server. This cookie does not provide cross-device login. Approximate city and state may also be cached on our server for up to 15 minutes to avoid repeated lookups.

If you leave a comment on our site, you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

We are not responsible or affiliated with any data external websites may collect from you.

Analytics

To track user browsing habits on our website and improve our website for you, we gather browsing data through Google Analytics (GA). Your data is anonymized. The anonymously collected data includes details such as device, screen resolution, pages browsed, duration of browsed pages, clicks, etc.

Who we share your data with

We do not share any information gathered about you to any external party in any method or for any reason, unless specifically stated concerning the particular set(s) of data.

We may store your data for a select period of time and use it internally for church-related purposes. In this case, your data will not be shared publicly within the church.

How long we retain your data

Voting records and their browser identifiers currently remain in our database until manually deleted; no automatic deletion period is configured. You can contact us at the email address below to request access to or deletion of records we can identify as yours. We may need details about your votes to locate guest records, since guest voting does not collect a name or email address.

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. Other service-provider processing, including the city/state lookup used for voting, is described in the relevant sections above.

Illustrative 60, 50 and 40 dBu contours calculated with the FCC Coverage API from 3800 S. Howell Ave., Milwaukee—the antenna location. The site marker and all three contours use the same address coordinates. For comparison, this estimate retains the earlier reference assumptions of 80 watts and an antenna radiation center of 244.6 meters above sea level; these are not verified antenna specifications for this address. Final coverage depends on the antenna’s actual height and power. Terrain can make the outlines uneven around the antenna. Actual reception varies with buildings, interference and your receiver.
