Julio’s father is a philandering alcoholic who dies when Julio is 16. He grows up with religion but not the Bible. He studies agricultural science at university and meets an American missionary who tells him about Jesus. Foolishly he steals car parts and goes to jail for a week. Afterward, the missionary tells him Jesus will set him free. He goes to church but to mock. After he graduates he gets drunk and nearly dies of pneumonia. He starts graduate school, then gets saved. His family rejects him and he lives with the missionary, whose daughter he marries. They go to the U.S. so he can go to Bible college and he becomes a missionary to Spain and Venezuela
