Bill hates parochial school, gets in trouble and fights growing up. He joins the Marines after high school, meets Marly and falls in love. He goes to Vietnam where she stops writing after he proposes. He survives the Tet Offensive, comes home and reconnects with Marly. He becomes a drill instructor, desensitizing him to life. When his tour is up, he goes to college and he and Marly are engaged. But she gets saved and breaks the engagement. He goes to church with her, keeps going back because the church is troubled and he expects a fight. One night he attends a deacon’s meeting where he is saved. He and Marly marry. Now an evangelist.
