His family’s cult religion doesn’t allow doctors, so David suffers ear infections as a child. Finally, he has surgery to remove tonsils and adenoids, then gets swimming water in his inner ear leaving him with Meniere’s Disease. He suffers ridicule for being off balance, isolates himself and does well in chemistry. In college he idolizes his professor who reduces him to tears. In graduate school he meets a Christian who leads him to Christ. David’s father professes faith in Christ before he dies of cancer. David follows Jeff to seminary but is rejected as a missionary. Now works as a consultant writing standardized tests.
