John’s father goes to prison and he grows up never having his dad hug him or say, “I love you.” His grandmother reads him the Psalms, but disillusionment leads him to rebel. He drinks, smokes and runs away at 13, returning to finish two years of high school. At 19 he marries a girl with a baby and they binge drink for several years. When her drunken relative threatens to shoot John, he leaves and gets a divorce two years later. Then he meets Pat, a woman with three children. They marry. A co-worker witnesses to John and he takes the children to church. One day he collapses unexpectedly and goes to the hospital where his co-worker’s pastor comes and leads him to Christ. He wants to be a pastor but his divorce precludes that option.
