Phyllis has many disappointments in life. She is born with a heart defect. Her father is a master weaver in a large textile mill that provides heart surgery when she is fifteen. She is gifted at the piano and her mother teaches her, but her father can’t afford college and sends her to secretarial school. She marries Gil but they can’t have children so they adopt. Gil secretly drinks, sending Phyllis into despair. She goes to a hospital where the chaplain encourages her to play the piano again. She leaves her husband to get alone with God, listens to Christian radio and prays to receive Christ; then she goes back to Gil. God delivers him from alcohol, but a year later he develops cancer, lives ten years, then dies. Phyllis now plays piano and witnesses to others.
