Tom’s first rebellion is poaching a deer at age eleven. His beloved grandfather dies when he is thirteen. Six months later his older brother is killed, and Tom quits going to church. His anger is aggravated by drinking, and he picks fights, has accidents and starts using marijuana. But he hates himself for hurting his parents, and prays for salvation after hearing an evangelist on television. He struggles, can’t change his lifestyle, so he goes to Houston where he meets a false prophet, prays and returns home to Wisconsin. He keeps reading the Bible, finally talks with the pastor and a counselor and has the assurance of salvation. Now a pastor with a ministry to hunters and fisherman.
