Mike rejects God as a teenager, joins the Marines but doesn’t go to Vietnam. He feels guilty at serving. A drug addict in denial, he becomes deputy sheriff, involved in undercover drug investigations. Illness, drugs and death threats destroy his marriage, and he plays Russian roulette. Takes dangerous job as a security guard, but steals drugs. As first part end, Mike is planning to kill the judge. His mother’s prayers stand in the gap.
